Design Decision/Approach: This artifact was a group assignment and was directed based on the need of the JMU X-Labs. Our approach to the design was that we wanted to create a functional prototype for the equipment at the JMU X-Labs. Our team sought guidance on the need of the X-Labs from the Subject Matter Expert and the Director of 4-VA. Once we determined the need for the JMU X-Labs, we also started looking into the learner's needs to determine how to create the prototype so that it would be universal for everyone who visits the X-Labs to use the equipment. Once everything was compiled, we determined that it would be best to have both a Start up guide for each machine that the Subject Matter Expert informed us that the X-Labs needed a guide for and a video tutorial to supplement the Start up guides. Through a series of steps, filming, and photoshop, we put together our final functional prototypes for the equipments at JMU X-Labs.

AECT STANDARDS APPLIED: AECT Standard 1 - Content Knowledge, 2 - Content Pedagogy, 3 - Learning Environments, 4 - Professional Knowledge and Skills, 5 - Research
- This artifact used AECT Standard 1 - Content Knowledge by creating learning material based on the learning environment in our approach. This was evident in the final functional prototype where our team created Start up guides for the JMU X-Labs. We created the learning material based off of learning theories mentioned in the design document. We also followed the ethics by using APA format to source our design document.
- This artifact used AECT Standard 2 - Content Pedagogy by creating learning material to improve the learning outcome at JMU X-Labs for everyone who will be using the equipment.
- This artifact also supported AECT Standard 3 - Learning Environments by using the ADDIE Model to assist us in the creation of the learning materials. We also referenced Lev Vygotsky's social development theory and Keller's Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction (ARCS) Motivational Model as the learning theory used to develop the learning material for the X-Labs.
- The artifact also used AECT Standard 4 - Professional Knowledge and Skills due to our need to refer to the Subject Matter Expert for documents, guidance, and demonstration of the equipment in order to develop our learning materials. We also had guidance from lab workers at the X-Labs to show us the equipment when the Subject Matter Experts were unavailable. Lastly, we also had surveys sent out to individuals of the JMU community to answer specific questions on their experience at the JMU X-Labs in order to create the learning material to benefit them as the learners.
- The last standard, AECT Standard 5 - Research, was used heavily to determine the content need and learners need. Once we determined the need for the development of the learning material, we proceeded with our research for the most beneficial learning theory that would be useful in an environment such as the JMU X-Labs where direct assistance from lab workers and Subject Matter Experts were limited to open lab hours. Due to specific constraints of the X-Labs such as personnel and time, our group had to research the best practices that would assist the learns at the X-Labs.
