I have a passion for learning.
My education at James Madison University first opened the door to this passion. I was a Biology and Anthropology major. I believe my experience in my education prepared me for my engagement with the outside world. When I went from being a student to a working adult, I did not think my career path would stray from my college major. I started my career working for the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a Human Services Specialist. I worked with disaster survivors from Hurricane Sandy, Irene, and Katrina. This position allowed me put my Anthropology degree to task due to my constant engagement with the people and the disaster assistance culture. However, the demand of the job overwhelmed me and I decided to seek other employment opportunities.
I decided to pursue a line of work in the biotech industry. I worked for a Tuberculosis Vaccine Research company for a year as a Quality Assurance Specialist. where I audited their standard operating procedures and quality assurance documents. I transitioned to their microbiology department where I studied the development of the new vaccines. Spending a year in the biology world helped me determine that I was not as interested in research or auditing paperwork. I left the biotech company in search of where my true passion lies.
While trying to find my place in the working world, I interviewed and was offered a position with Navy Federal Credit Union as a Mortgage Processor. My time as a Mortgage Processor taught me everything I know now in Real Estate Lending. When given the opportunity, I strived to educate my team members, family members and friends about the mortgage process. I created presentations and instructional hand outs for my team to help them complete their daily tasks more efficiently.
My skills include a high level of accuracy when reviewing documents and information to comply with investor and Federal guidelines. This also helps me to assist in the creation of new guidelines. I often encourage collaborative projects to help with the development of learning. I have the ability to quickly learn and educate my peers in new information and procedures. This ability made me a very valuable asset for the Mortgage department.
In February 2016, I was given the opportunity to interview for the Instructional Designer position. Due to my limited knowledge of Instructional Design, I was not offered the position. However, the hiring supervisor advised me to pursue formal training to determine if Instructional Design was my passion. This advice led me to my current enrollment in James Madison University. I started out as a Non-degree seeking student taking the Design and Development of Digital Media as well as Foundations of Educational Technology classes. Taking classes in Ed Tech at JMU sparked my interest and encouraged me to complete the certificate program. At the conclusion of the certificate program, I decided that I do have a passion for Educational Technology so I decided to apply to complete my Master’s degree. This is why I am here today. Educational Technology allowed me to combine my passion for learning and my love of creativity together to produce instructional material that would benefit different levels of learning. My goal is to design learning material that would be beneficial to a large community.
In September of 2017, I stepped into my new role within Navy Federal Credit Union as an Instructional Designer for the Real Estate Lending Training department. Due to my Mortgage Processing experience, along with my Educational Technology certificate, I was offered the opportunity to create learning instruction for a topic in which I held a lot of knowledge and on hand expertise. My desire to learn and to teach has assisted me to obtain such a rewarding job experience. I will bring all that I have learned from my Educational Technology to my new position.
I believe that education is a right.
